If evolution has no goal, Then what about the finches?

In the past due to drought, the food the big hard beaked birds depended on did not grow, so all species ate the same food. Had the drought, been the other way, there would have been no way small tender beaks could have managed food designed for much stronger beaks and would most likely to have become extinct. Nature therefore puts variety before extinction Variety stimulates the senses, and with a little help, lead to intelligent life. So does evolution though having no goal, have stages to achieve?
